“I’ve been pretending to be a man I’m not my entire life. I’ve been pretending to be strong when I felt weak. Confident when I felt insecure. And tough when really I was hurting. I think for the most part I’ve just been kind of putting on a show.”
So says actor and filmmaker Justin Baldoni, best known for his role as Rafael on the CW show Jane the Virgin, in an honest and important TED talk on masculinity.
Baldoni challenges men to consider whether they are brave enough to be vulnerable or strong enough to be sensitive, while also encouraging men to be fully human; not just striving to be “a good man” but a “good human.”
